Jeanne DeVoto, Net-Avenger!!!

(Gee, you don't look much like a net-avenger. Shouldn't a net-avenger have, like, long flowing blonde tresses? And rippling muscles? And a cape? You've got to at least have a--)

Some random biographical facts: I was born in San Franciso, went to Reed College and did a double major (and found myself finishing my second thesis, at four o'clock in the morning, asking myself "Why in God's name did I agree to do this twice?"). After a period spent as a Reed bum, part-time programmer, and this and that, I moved back to California in the hope of finding work that paid more than minimum wage. But Portland was always home to me, and I'm back here now.

For the past several years I've worked as a computer geek-of-all-trades, mostly at Macintosh-oriented companies. I've done software QA, technical support, custom programming, and technical writing; these days I'm mostly into the joys of on-screen help and info presentation, on the Web and elsewhere. I've been on the WELL for about eight years, have hosted several conferences there, and served on its board of directors for a mercifully short period in 1992. The WELL isn't what it used to be, but in some ways I still think of what it used to be as home. I was one of the founding members of the River, although I no longer have an account there. I've also been around Usenet since 1985, with occasional hiatuses; was active on Compu$erve, particularly their Mac forums, for about three years; have a seldom-used charter account on America Online.
